Over 82 million people are at risk for at least one NTD in Ethiopia. Approximately 38% of of the global population at risk for trachoma live in Ethiopia, making it one of the most endemic countries in the world. In 2013, the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) launched an ambitious plan to control or eliminate the seven most common NTDs by 2020.
ENVISION is helping the FMOH to reach this goal by supporting supporting activities at the central level and in the implementation of district-level treatment campaigns across four regional states: Beneshangul-Gumuz, Gambella, Oromia, and Tigray.
IN ETHIOPIA, ENVISION has supported the Federal Ministry of Health to
Map 40 districts for schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminths (STH)
Treat nearly 25 million people for lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis, STH and trachoma across four regions
Train more than 77,000 government officials and health workers to implement mass drug administration and conduct supportive supervision
Assess the impact of the trachoma program through 41 surveys, determining that nearly half a million people are no longer at risk
Strengthen Ethiopia’s health system by assisting the FMOH to implement an integrated NTD database, compiling data for all diseases into one centralized repository for better data management and use
