Democratic Republic of Congo

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is a high-priority country in global NTD efforts, with more than 78 million people at risk. DRC’s national NTD program aims to control and eliminate NTDs, currently focusing on the completion of disease mapping and scale-up of treatment throughout the country.

In DRC, ENVISION support has been critical in completing baseline mapping for trachoma in 40 health zones. ENVISION also supports district-level treatment campaigns for lymphatic filariasis (LF), onchocerciasis (oncho), schistosomiasis (schisto) and soil-transmitted helminths (STH) in 6 health zones.

In DRC, ENVISION has supported the Ministry of Health to

Map 40 health zones for trachoma, supporting the training and implementation according to WHO standards

Treat more than 650,000 people for LF, oncho, schisto and STH across 6 health zones

Train more than 7,100 government officials, health workers, teachers, and community drug distributors on skills needed to effectively carry out mass treatment campaigns

Assess LF prevalence through sentinel site surveys in 11 health zones of Bandundu and Maniema provinces, a critical step in targeting LF interventions

Strengthen DRC’s health system by providing technical and financial support for the development of the DRC’s NTD Master Plan, including a situation analysis, operational framework, and NTD strategic agenda for 2016–2020
